South Carolina Ballet has once again been recognized as one of the nation’s leading professional ballet companies, earning a ranking of #69 in the United States in the Dance Data Project’s Largest 150 U.S. Ballet and Classically Based Companies 2025 report. The annual national study ranks professional ballet organizations, providing an objective measure of each company’s scale within the American ballet industry.
The ranking places South Carolina Ballet firmly within the nation’s “Next 50” ballet companies (Ranks 51–100), while the company’s nearest local counterpart, Columbia Classical Ballet, is ranked #134, within the report’s “Additional 50” (Ranks 101–150).
While the Dance Data Project’s rankings are based on financial scale and reflect the capacity required to sustain a professional ballet organization. South Carolina Ballet’s position is supported by characteristics that distinguish the country’s established professional companies:
- a fully professional operating model;
- a regular annual mainstage performance season;
- paid professional dancers and artistic staff;
- meaningful statewide and interstate touring;
- a recognizable signature repertory that includes both classical masterworks and original productions; and
- a significant cultural footprint extending well beyond its home city.
For more than six decades, South Carolina Ballet has served audiences throughout the Palmetto State while building one of the most extensive touring histories of any performing arts organization based in South Carolina. The company has presented performances in 51 South Carolina communities, bringing professional ballet to audiences from the Upstate to the Lowcountry and across the Midlands and Pee Dee.
Beyond South Carolina, the company has appeared regularly throughout the Southeast, including performances in Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, and West Virginia, while also touring to Washington, D.C.; National Harbor, Maryland; Chicago, Illinois; and Palm Springs, California.
This extensive touring reflects South Carolina Ballet’s longstanding mission to make professional ballet accessible to audiences throughout the region while representing South Carolina on stages across the country. Combined with its nationally recognized productions, including Dracula: Ballet with a Bite, Off the Wall & Onto the Stage: Dancing the Art of Jonathan Green, The Nutcracker, and the great classical ballets, the company continues to strengthen its reputation as one of the Southeast’s leading professional ballet institutions.
