Production Info
South Carolina Ballet invites you to experience the shimmering world of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, celebrating the 200th anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn’s iconic score. This production brings Shakespeare’s beloved comedy to life through a blend of dance and music, transporting audiences to a fantastical world where love, magic, and mischief intertwine.
Set in an enchanted forest, the ballet follows the adventures of four young lovers and a group of amateur actors who become entangled in the whimsical disputes of the forest king and queen, Oberon and Titania. Mendelssohn’s evocative music, composed in 1826, is internationally noted as a remarkably integrated, unified, and seamless work of theatrical music, and it includes one of the world’s most famous pieces of music ever composed, “The Wedding March.” Arguably the most respected musical composition created specifically for a ballet, the incredible score perfectly captures the production’s ethereal atmosphere.
Columbia performances will feature live music by the SC Ballet Orchestra, conducted by Scott Weiss.
Created in 1987 by Artistic Director William Starrett, the production showcases a harmonious blend of classical ballet and theatrical storytelling. Audiences will be mesmerized by the intricate choreography, lavish costumes, and imaginative sets that bring the magical forest and its inhabitants to life.
Join us as South Carolina Ballet presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a timeless tale of love and fantasy that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
