William Starrett Awarded the Order of the Palmetto During South Carolina Ballet’s 65th Anniversary Performance.
Columbia, South Carolina — William Starrett, CEO and Artistic Director of South Carolina Ballet, has been awarded the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor, recognizing his lifetime of artistic achievement and service to the state.
Unaware that the honor was coming, Starrett was surprised on stage during bows at the conclusion of the March 7th performance of Sapphire Ballet & Gala at the Koger Center for the Arts, where he was presented with the Order of the Palmetto before the audience. The recognition came during South Carolina Ballet’s 65th Anniversary Season and as Starrett began his 40th year as Artistic Director of the company.
The award was presented by South Carolina Ballet’s former Prima Ballerina Mariclare Miranda, who Mr. Starrett presented with the same honor in 2006, and Jared Smith, President of the Board of Directors.
The Order of the Palmetto recognizes individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary lifetime achievement, selfless service, and significant contributions to the state of South Carolina. The award is bestowed at the discretion of the Governor and is considered the state’s highest civilian recognition.
Starrett has led South Carolina Ballet for four decades, guiding the company’s artistic growth while expanding its reach throughout the state. Founded in 1961 as Columbia City Ballet, the organization was renamed South Carolina Ballet in 2023 to reflect its statewide mission and impact.
Under Starrett’s leadership, the company has grown into a major cultural institution in the region, presenting acclaimed mainstage productions across South Carolina and the Southeast while expanding its arts education programming. Its Educational Outreach & Engagement Series now serves more than 20,000 students each year, many from Title I and rural schools across South Carolina.
“South Carolina has given me a lifetime of inspiration,” said Starrett. “This recognition belongs to the remarkable artists, staff members, volunteers, board members, and supporters who have made South Carolina Ballet successful for the past 65 years.”
