South Carolina Ballet Artistic Director and CEO William Starrett has been named to the Free Times 2025 Empowerment List, recognizing the people who continue to shape Columbia’s arts, culture and hospitality communities.

Starrett was honored in the Vanguards category, which highlights longtime leaders whose influence has helped place Columbia on the map.

For decades, Starrett has been a defining presence in the city’s performing arts community. Under his leadership, South Carolina Ballet has developed a wide-ranging repertoire of original productions, established annual traditions including Dracula: Ballet With A Bite and Nutcracker, and expanded its reach through performances across South Carolina and throughout the Southeast.

The Free Times also recognized Starrett’s ability to introduce ballet to broad audiences through imaginative programming, accessible storytelling and innovative marketing. Beyond the stage, his civic involvement and longstanding support of charitable causes have further strengthened his impact throughout the Midlands.

The annual Empowerment List celebrates individuals who are advancing Columbia’s creative and cultural life. Honorees were organized into three categories: Vanguards, Innovators and Ones to Watch.

South Carolina Ballet congratulates William Starrett on this well-deserved recognition and celebrates his continued dedication to the company, its artists and the communities it serves.
